Luxury boutique hotels have led to a deep yearning for glamour in our own residences. Whether lavish spa-like indulgence appeals,  or you prefer a twist on the classic bathroom of the past, this hot trend is set to run and run. This season designers are dazzling us with tantalising products from grand built-in baths and glittering tiles to ornate furniture. But how do you ensure that you stay on the right side of tastefully opulent without going completely and utterly over the top?

Keeping it simple
One of the biggest decisions you’ll have to make is how far to take your design - do you long for understated chic or a full-on ‘wow’? Low key certainly doesn’t mean you’ll be losing out.

In fact, creating an elegant wet zone can be as easy as introducing one key statement piece or investing in some beautiful furniture. If you have plenty of space, freestanding baths can provide a superb focal point. Look out for tubs in natural materials with lavish colours and metallic finishes. And for fashionistas who adore items which are practical as well as in vogue, why not be inspired by the latest vanity units from Italy’s finest cabinet makers? Exuding the charm associated with the best bedroom collections, they come in a range of vivid hues with gilt handles and ornate legs. A wonderful innovation for the sanctuary, these new pieces will add flair and excitement to your home.

Putting on the ritz
If you intend to capture a feeling of grandeur at home, then select the most beautiful materials you can afford. Why not commission bespoke oak furniture, or go for a dramatic granite feature wall to decorate your haven? Select furnishings that are out of the ordinary, such as super-sized looking glasses and retro-inspired mirrored tubs. And don’t forget that a burst of colour in your cabinetry will add individuality to your scheme, and update a classic look too. High ceilings and expanses of marble will meld with rich lacquers and wood grains harmoniously. But the key to a supreme space ultimately lies in clever storage solutions, from cabinets to shelves and drawers.

Spoilt for choice
Decoration is as important as fixtures and fittings when it comes to 21st century wet zone design! Get set to dazzle with the eye-popping glittering mosaics and patterned tiles which are seeing a surge in popularity. Or be inspired by the revival of stylish wallpaper in the best-dressed homes. Be brave with your choice of colour and motifs to fashion a glorious haven which would not look out of place in one of the world’s top-end hotels!

Harmonious elements
Whether you’re drawn to a monochrome palette, soft neutral tones or rich chocolatey hues, just ensure that you work with shades which perfectly complement each other. Keep your washstand simple and uncluttered, to maintain its chic good looks. Take note of avant garde schemes from the globe’s leading designers, which reinterpret Gothic and Baroque styles for the present day. Tactile quilted panels, luxe seating and unexpected details, such as legs on bath surrounds, have brought a playful element to the bathing sanctuary. Add a chandelier and an ornate mirror, to make your haven a place to linger in and treasure forever.

Go with the flow
For the ultimate in show-stopping style, every last detail needs to be carefully considered. The latest high-spec brassware, from luxe taps to watering can-style showerheads, will add a perfect finishing touch to your scheme. Look out for fixtures in shiny gold or platinum to set off a copper bateau or contemporary tub. Mirrors and countertops are a great place to add a touch of magnificent gold, especially when set against an understated décor of silver-grey. It looks striking when mixed with well-designed wooden furniture, to stash away those favourite pampering products. But, in all the excitement of putting together your new dream bathroom, don’t forget to make it personal with some subtle adornments such as pictures and ornaments. Clever lighting will also bring your room to life! Now that your stunning wet zone is complete, it’s definitely time to dress it to its full advantage, so you can enjoy it day and night!
